Video: Open source government

Open source is answering the call at government agencies on all levels as they look for opportunities to carve out costs and improve security, transparency, public participation, and collaboration. Why? Open source is stable, trustworthy, and secure, and Red Hat solutions are being used across government agencies to create efficiencies, eliminate vendor lock-in, meet mission-critical IT demands, and improve service delivery.

Great video. I didn’t even know the US is making efforts to introduce Open Source into its government. I thought only EU tries this sort of things.

I hope to god that open source doesn’t end up being as “good” as the US government. On the other hand, if the US government ends up being as good as open source, _that_ would be good.

The National Security Agency has been developing their version of SElinex for years as well as the Department of Veterans Affairs. Will say with the lawsuit against Microsoft a few years ago we were asked to change over to Ope Source systems.

This is one of the intuitively obvious couplings of common interest and government policy. I wrote a brief entry last month on this topic (http://harrysutton.livejournal.com/1953.html,) and I’m personally delighted to see Red Hat so deeply involved in this important process.

They certainly are NOT in a hurry that’s for sure.
I’ve been trying to stand up a RHEL server on an Army network for more than 12 months now, nothing but a simple LAMP box.
Mired in paperwork and signature hunting, it’s ridiculous really.
Please ‘tip’ already Linux.
