Download this video: [Ogg Theora]

In the second installment of the Spotlight On series, we feature Red Hat engineer Richard Hughes on the fantastic new abstraction layer called PackageKit. PackageKit allows users to manage packages in a secure way using a cross-distro, cross-architecture API. This maintains a common set of GUI features, enabling the user to have a better session experience overall. For more information, visit www.packagekit.org.

Having used PackageKit since it was introduced in Fedora 9 I can only say this is one of the most important new developments on the desktop in recent history. Tying in the ability to install features on demand is simply amazing and best of all it doesn’t matter what distro I am using it on. The experience is the same. PackageKit lets developers easily complete an existing incomplete experience – no codecs for playing this file, no required headers to develop this type of project and so on, let’s search for them and install them.

Richard has really brought about something great here and more importantly he has managed to get buy-in and excitement going from every angle.

[...] Fedora 10 (Cambridge) ..brimming with features :Fedora 10 was released this week. Just like many others ,I gave up on Fedora long back and switched to Ubunutu. But Fedora 10 has got rave reviews ,I am tempted to give Fedora 10 a try.  Fedora 10 brims with new features, including a new graphical boot manager   that uses some nifty features from the linux kernel to provide a ‘flicker less’ boot process.  Another significant addition is enhancements to PackageKit , its  software management tool ,that install libraries and codec’s on demand ,transparent to the user. The idea looks very promising. Need to see how this progresses. [...]

This is a great idea… most people new to a linux distribution will really like this. For some reason, this will have a huge positive impact on his/her impression. The people who are more technical will be impressed with how the project turns complex task into a simple one.

Overall, it will help the new users explore using linux distributions and have fun too! :)
