Remixing Fedora 7

Fedora™ 7 hits the streets on May 31st. One of the most exciting features of the Fedora 7 release is the fact that users can remix the Fedora code in any variety of ways. Tools are provided that allow the user to build either a customized LiveCD or installable ISO, and to reach out to any 3rd-party RPM repositories and pull in packages from them at compose time.

Announcing the Fedora Award winners for 2007

The Fedora Award is presented by Red Hat to the brightest stars of the Fedora community. Of the thousands of valuable contributors to Fedora, these are the individual contributors who have most strongly distinguished themselves over the past year. Building a community Linux distribution is hard work, and a lot of “heavy lifting” goes on behind the scenes. Without the dedication of these individual community members, Fedora would not be nearly as successful as it has become. We are extremely pleased to announce the winners of the inaugural Fedora awards for 2007.

Whirlwind Wheelchair empowers the disabled with open source

SideView

Getting from point A to point B is a need that we all have, but what if you’re in a third-world country and require a wheelchair? For those who are disabled and live in developing countries, the average wheelchair is usually not an ideal solution. After all, how many “average” wheelchairs can handle rocky and rough terrain or are available in places where hospitals or doctor visits are a luxury few can afford?

That’s where Whirlwind Wheelchair International steps in. They believe that anyone who needs a wheelchair should have access to one, giving them the physical independence needed for everyday living in normal society–no matter where in the world they are.

The lowdown on GPL 3 (with Eben Moglen)

(podcast) With the help of Red Hat deputy counsel Mark Webbink, we tracked down Eben Moglen at the Red Hat Summit earlier this month. We asked him about GPL 3, why he’s leaving the Free Software Foundation (FSF), and learned what’s next for the pioneering legal scholar. Interview by Kim Jokisch.

Open source in education? Now that’s using your Moodle.

Video by Brad Boll and Jim Haverkamp
Produced by Julie Bryce

Ever heard of Blackboard? Or if you’re young enough, remember online assignments using WebAssign or Maple? Moodle is a content management system with similar capabilities, but it’s open source and completely free. Free as in beer. (They do gratefully accept donations.)

The line between learning in the classroom and learning independently has been forever blurred. Thanks to the resources of the web, kids as young as nine can learn the way college students do. Completing online assignments at home, reviewing lessons from the previous day at their own pace, and communicating with instructors and peers without picking up a phone.

(video)  Little green men often make the front pages of supermarket tabloids. Little green laptops? Not so much.

But this Sunday, the XO (which we’ve been talking about for months) will get its mainstream news debut on CBS’s highly regarded program, 60 Minutes. (A far cry from the National Enquirer.)

Faces familiar to our readers have helped make Nicholas Negroponte’s dream a reality. From the earliest concept (remember the hand crank?) to its current working build which has been deployed in several nations for beta testing, this laptop has come a long way. And it would not have been possible without the hard work of folks like Chris Blizzard, Dan Williams, David Woodhouse, Marcelo Tosatti, and John “J5″ Palmieri.

Just as our developers were inspired by Nicolas Negroponte and Walter Bender’s concepts, we hope the millions watching Sunday night’s newscast will see in the project the promise for a worldwide solution to poverty. In a word: education.

And more than that, we hope they’ll get involved, whether it’s donating money, developing code, or simply spreading the good word.

Congratulations to everyone working on the project. We wish you continued good luck and prosperity. And good press.

XOXO

Painless dual-booting with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 and a MacBookPro

I know there are many OS X users curious about running Linux on their Mac hardware, but are overwhelmed with the configuration options. There are also many Linux users who want to work on one machine and would like to dual-boot OS X and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.
